Distance between Chicago and San Jose similar to Chicago and London, however flying time almost double?

I just booked a ticket from Chicago to London. The distance is roughly 3950 miles (and that corresponds to the frequent flyer miles I am receiving) and the flying time nearly 8 hours. Chicago to San Jose, CA is roughly 3750 miles and takes 4.5 hours. Why is the flying time so much longer when the distances seem comparable?
